Outdoor 115 kWh sodium cabinets
- Equipment
- 2 NFPP cabinets of 115 kWh
- Result
- continuous outdoor operation since April 2024 and February 2025
Solution
The storage system charges at night and discharges during peak load hours. Billed capacity and the share of expensive energy go down, and during a grid outage the battery carries the critical load.

power of a single cabinet; cabinets are combined into groups
manufacturer dataConsumers in price categories 3-6 pay for capacity during the system operator's scheduled peak hours. A single peak hour sets the charge for the whole month.
Energy in the daytime and evening costs more than at night. Production cannot move its shift, but storage can shift consumption.
Voltage dips and outages lasting seconds or minutes stop production lines and spoil products. A genset cannot respond to such events in time.
Production growth hits the connection limit. Storage covers peaks without increasing contracted capacity.
Solution
The control system charges the storage during cheap hours and discharges it during peak hours, by schedule and by actual load.
Discharging during scheduled peak hours reduces billed capacity.
| Mode | How it works | When it applies |
|---|---|---|
| Lower capacity charges | discharge during the system operator's scheduled peak hours | price categories 3-6 in Russia, contracts with capacity charges |
| Load shifting | charge at the night tariff, discharge during expensive hours | time-of-use tariffs, day and night price difference |
| Load peak shaving | covering inrush currents and short peaks | capacity limit under the contract or transformer rating |
| Backup for critical loads | island mode during a grid outage | continuous processes, cold storage warehouses, healthcare |
| On-site solar generation | storing surplus and supplying it in the evening | rooftop solar plant or one next to the site |
Payback periods are an example calculation for a site in Russia with a typical profile. Your payback depends on the load profile, tariff and price category.
Russia
Capacity charges go down only if discharge coincides with the scheduled peak hours that the system operator publishes in advance. For price categories 4 and 6 the network maintenance rate is also included in the calculation. We calculate both effects from an hourly profile for a full year, not from a single month.
